Designing for High Availability – From Physical to Virtualized Network Functions

July 31, 2025 | 2 p.m. ET

In 2010, Fred Baumgartner delivered a powerful SBE webinar on The Mathematics of Reliability, walking us through MTBF, MTTR, and the role of redundancy in physical broadcast systems. Fifteen years later, the reliability conversation has evolved.

This webinar revisits those foundational concepts and extends them into today’s hybrid environments, where physical infrastructure coexists with virtual machines, cloud-native platforms, and containerized network functions.  With real-world examples, including case studies from Netflix and AWS, this session explores how reliability engineering has adapted to the cloud era. We’ll look at how modern architectures apply traditional concepts like N:M redundancy, fault tolerance, and bulkhead isolation, across both physical and software-defined domains.

Whether you’re managing a playout chain, monitoring platform, or backend infrastructure, this session will help you design for failure, because in today’s world, failure is no longer the exception, it’s the expectation.

Instructor

Ruben Calzadilla, Sr. Technical Advisor, Technology Enablement – Intelsat

Ruben Calzadilla is a seasoned broadcast and media systems engineer with over 25 years of experience. At Intelsat, he focuses on high-availability media workflows across satellite, IP, and cloud-based infrastructure. Ruben is a subject matter expert in MPEG-TS, SRT/RIST, distributed systems, and containerization. A firm believer in operational observability and reliability-by-design, he helps media organizations evolve legacy systems into agile, cloud-native platforms.
