Modernizing EAS for the Future – Software Defined EAS, a More Resilient Alerting Ecosystem
EAS Encoding/Decoding is one of the last components in the TV or Radio broadcast chain that have not been absorbed into appliances, software, or transmission processes. Discussions are underway regarding the future of EAS Modernization. In consultation with FEMA, IPAWS and the FCC, new innovative ideas are being proposed that could streamline and strengthen the Emergency Alert System by moving part of the EAS system into software. The proposed design would provide resiliency over the infrastructure that is in place now. This presentation will discuss about the legacy system that is in place, and some of the concepts broadcasters and regulators are looking at for the future that are under consideration. Also, we will touch on the present state of EAS rulemaking proceedings, including the Commission’s recent inquiry regarding enabling multilingual alerts.
Presenter: Alan Jurison, CPBE, AMD, DRB, CBNE; Senior Operations Engineer, iHeartMedia

Broadcast Infrastructure 101

We will also discuss IP characteristics that are now present in broadcast signal chains.

FCC Compliance for your Facility

The recent years, the FCC has focused more on issues that affect public safety and have issued numerous fines for violations. Having updated EAS equipment and proper monitoring of local LP stations as well as logging of the required information in the Station Log will be discussed. Proper tower light monitoring is another area of focus, especially logging and Quarterly Tower Light inspections if your facility owns its towers. Examples of forms will be provided and question and answer period will be provided.

Audio Considerations for TV and Radio
Why can’t I hear the dialog/announcers? I thought the CALM act was supposed to make the commercials the same level as the program? When I worked on ABC Monday Night Football our motto was TV without audio is surveillance!
Presenter: Mike Pappas, Field Engineer and VP of Business Development, Orban
